September and the start of school always means you’re bound to catch something, and that’s exactly what happened this time. I didn’t feel too bad yet, but my Apple Watch and connected apps showed that something was off. Despite this, I decided to race. I didn’t feel great, but I wasn’t feeling terrible either, and after all, a National Championship is still a National Championship.
Four of us from BTS lined up: Bagi Panna in WU17, Szentpéteri Andris in Elite, Szilárd in Masters, and me in Men’s U17. We had no chance to help each other, but at least we had a nice chat and warmed up together before the start.
Magyarhertelend holds a special place in my heart, so I was happy that the National Hill Climb Championship started from there.
The distance for our age group (U17) was 17 km with 446 meters of elevation. It’s more of a hill than a mountain—I’d call Kékestető a real mountain—but there was still some elevation to tackle. I made sure to stay near the front. (Thanks to Zengő for the photo!)
I didn’t ride particularly well, but I gave everything my physical condition allowed. In the end, I completed the course in 31:41, finishing 9th. My average speed was 30.5 km/h, with an average power output of 273 watts (including zeros).
By the evening, I was fully sick. So yeah, trust your Apple Watch—it knows what it’s talking about.
