63 Radsaison-Eröffnungsrennen Leonding – Austria – 24 March 2024

The Radsaison-Eröffnungsrennen Leonding was my first international race with the new team. The distance was 85 km.

As a first-year U19 rider, I was in a support role for this race—a role I’ll mostly be playing throughout the season, except for the time trial nationals. We’re riding for the second-year guys.

We started in 6°C with a 20 km/h wind. The rain came and went throughout the race.

By now, I’m used to how thorough the Austrian organizers are. We were given active chips for the bikes, and the route was well secured. I really appreciate when we’re taken seriously, and all we have to focus on is the race. There’s always enough risk involved as it is—there was also a crash during the race, as we raced on wet roads and over varying asphalt surfaces, especially with such a large field at the start. But that’s a risk you can accept.

We did what was expected: Zsombi Balogh won the race. I was the third rider from our team to cross the line, placing 34th in my category. The course was 85 kilometers with 920 meters of elevation gain, and I averaged 40.3 km/h, putting out 204 watts on average (including zeros), finishing in 2:07:45.
